When Do Spider Plants Have Babies?

Spider plants begin to produce babies when they turn mature enough to feed new plants on the stems.

If you have a small plant at home, you shouldn't expect to see any such growth in your plant.

It might take 8-12 months for the plant to have babies, depending on the size and nutrients available for the plant.

When the plant gets decent conditions for its growth, you will surely see quite a few runners on the main plant.

These runners will ultimately give birth to new pups in a while.

Now, is there anything you can do to speed up this process in your plant?

Well, there are a few things that might help get babies on the Spider plant.

Note: There is no magic formula to see such growth in your plant.

The whole thing depends on a lot of factors, and the plant may also take its own time to produce babies.

So, be patient and try to follow the common guidelines for your plant.

In the following section, I have talked more about these guidelines in detail.

Do check them out if you are interested in learning them.

6 Things You Can Do To Have More Spider Plant Babies

Here's a list of things you should do -

    1. Choose A Right-Sized Pot For The Spider Plant

It's quite important to choose the right pot for your Spider plant.

If you select a small pot for a medium-sized plant, it won't be sufficient for it.

The plant will outgrow the pot in a few weeks or months.

It might cause a lack of resources in the soil, and the plant won't be able to grow at a steady rate.

As a result, the plant will not spend its energy on producing new stems or babies.

So, you should definitely go for a slightly bigger pot than what the plant needs at the current moment.

Ideally, you can go 1-2 sizes bigger than the current pot, which is also an excellent measure to select the right pot for your growing Spider plant.

Note: The Spider plant generally gives birth to new plants when it's slightly rootbound.

If you have a mature plant at home, you should probably wait to see the new stems growing from this plant.

Do not move this plant to a bigger pot for a few weeks at least.

    2. Provide Well-Draining Soil To The Plant

The Spider plant doesn't prefer damp or wet soil.

If that's the case in your plant container, the plant will be under stress for a long time.

Eventually, it might just succumb to these conditions.

Also, when the roots of this plant turn wet, they become inefficient in providing adequate nutrients and other resources to the plant.

Due to this, the plant focuses more on preserving its resources.

Therefore, if it's not growing new stems or babies, you should consider changing the soil.

Prepare a fresh batch of well-draining soil and add it to the pot.

Once you do that, you should wait for a couple of weeks to see the desired results.

    3. Remove The New Shoots From The Pot

It's the other thing you can do to encourage the plant to produce new stems.

When there are multiple plants in the pot, it makes sense to remove some of the younger ones from the pot.

You can plant these new shoots in different pots and continue to grow them as you usually do.

For this process, you will have to follow the root division method.

It will allow you to separate the excess plants from the pot.

Furthermore, you should also remove the excess roots from the plant.

When you have many plants in the pot, the main plant might get rootbound.

So, it's better to perform light pruning on the unwanted roots of the plant.

    4. Fertilize The Plant Regularly

The Spider plant is not a very high feeder, but it does require some nutrients to grow and produce more babies.

If you haven't fertilized the plant in a long time, it'd be a good idea to fertilize it right away.

For fertilizers, you can choose any general-purpose fertilizer or compost for this plant.

Try to fertilize the plant before watering, as it will help reach the nutrients quickly to the roots.

Also, don't go overboard on adding fertilizers.

It might work against the plant, and you won't see any babies around the plant.

    5. Keep It Near Natural Light

It's one of the most important things you can do to make this plant grow rapidly.

The Spider plant loves natural light, and there is no better way to provide sunlight than placing it near a window.

Of course, the plant doesn't like direct sunlight.

If you put it in such conditions, the leaves might start turning yellow, and the tips will turn brown.

You need to be careful while choosing the location for this plant, as it plays a crucial role in the growth of this plant.

As for sunlight, you should provide at least 3-4 hours of natural light to this plant.

It should be good enough for the plant to thrive and come up with new babies in the coming season.

    6. Keep The Plant In A Decently Ventilated Room

Along with the sunlight, it's quite necessary to keep this plant in a decently ventilated place in your home.

When you keep this plant in such a place, it allows the plant and the topsoil to dry out quickly.

Consequently, the plant remains in good condition and doesn't get affected by too much moisture.

So, make sure you find a place where the plant will not have any issues with wet soil and excess moisture.

On that note, these are the things that might encourage your Spider plant to have babies in the near future.

    Do try out these suggestions.

I'm sure you will see some great results in the coming weeks.

In the next section, I have shared some FAQs related to this topic.

Let's check them out as well.

    FAQs

    1. How Do Spider Plants Reproduce?

The Spider plant can reproduce through its runners and offshoots that grow from the soil.

These are the ways that will give you new plants for propagation.

This plant also produces seeds after flowering.

You can collect these seeds and plant them in the pot for new plants.

However, it's a slow process to grow new Spider plants.

If you want to see quick results, you should opt for the above two ways.

    2. Is My Spider Plant Have Babies?

You will have to look at the plant carefully to know whether your plant is having babies or not.

The Spider plant will produce new shoots from the soil or through the stems/runners.

If you see new stems coming out of the mother plant, it's a sign that your plant will have new babies in a few weeks.

    3. Can I Leave The Babies On My Spider Plant?

Yes, you can leave the babies on the plant.

But it's always a good idea to remove the babies from the mother plant.

If you let them be on the plant, they won't grow as big as the main plant.

Each new plant will compete with other plants on the stem, which might cause stunted growth in these new pups.

    4. When Do Spider Plants Flower?

The Spider plant often flowers in the summer and spring seasons.

    5. How Long Does It Take For Spider Plant Babies To Grow Roots?

It might take 5-6 days or a couple of weeks to grow roots on the Spider plant babies.

However, if you see nubs on the bottom of these plants, you can cut the plants off from the runner and put them into the soil or water.

You don't have to wait for the complete formation of the roots on these new plants.

Once you put them in the new growing medium, the plants will automatically grow roots from the nubs.
