How To Grow A Snake Plant In The Bathroom

Here are the tips and suggestions you can use to grow your Snake plant -

1. Use Well-Draining Soil Mix

This is the one thing that many people forget when growing houseplants in bathrooms.

So, I thought I should mention it first.

Since the bathroom is a humid space, it's important to use a well-draining potting mix for your Snake plant.

Otherwise, your plant's roots will start to rot, and eventually, the plant will die.

If you're not sure what potting mix to use, I would suggest you get one that is specifically designed for cacti and succulents.

These potting mixes are perfect for Snake plants.

You can also use a regular potting mix and add some perlite or coarse sand to it.

This will help improve the drainage of the potting mix.

2. Water Your Plant Regularly

Even though Snake plants are pretty drought-tolerant, they still need to be watered regularly.

Ideally, you should water your plant once a week.

However, during the summer months, when the weather is hotter, you may need to water your plant more often.

That said, when you place a Snake plant in the bathroom, there's no need to worry about watering it too often.

The humidity in the bathroom will help keep the soil moist, so you won't have to water your plant as often.

Still, you should check the soil regularly to ensure it's not too dry.

The best way to do that is to stick your finger in the soil up to the first knuckle.

If the soil feels dry, it's time to water your plant.

3. Place Your Plant In A Bright Spot

Placing your Snake plant in a bright spot is important for two reasons.

First, it will help your plant grow well.

Second, it will prevent the leaves from yellowing.

So, what is a bright spot?

Ideally, you should place your plant in an area where it can get some sunlight for at least four hours a day.

But if that's not possible, you can also place your plant in an area where it can get bright, indirect light.

In general, Snake plants do well in bright locations.

If your bathroom is well lit, that's great.

But if it's not, you can also place your plant on a windowsill where it can get some sunlight.

Below, I have shared more tips on how to grow this plant in a bathroom with no windows.

So, do check out those guidelines if that's the case with your bathroom.

4. Fertilize Your Plant Once In A While

Fertilizing your Snake plant is important to keep it growing and encourage new leaf growth.

And you can't expect your plant to get all the nutrients it needs from the potting mix alone.

That said, you don't need to fertilize your plant too often.

Fertilizing it once a month is more than enough.

You can even fertilize the plant in 2-3 months but do provide some fertilizer to the plant.

Don't ignore it completely.

As for the type of fertilizer, I would recommend using a liquid fertilizer, especially when you want to grow the Snake plant in the bathroom.

Because it's just easier to apply.

And the best part is you can always dilute the fertilizer if you think you're applying too much.

You can also use a slow-release fertilizer if you don't want to fertilize your plant too often.

5. Prune Your Plant Regularly

Pruning is another essential element in growing a Snake plant in the bathroom.

That's because, over time, the plant will start to get leggy.

And when that happens, it will lose its attractiveness.

So, to prevent that from happening, you should prune your plant regularly.

You can prune the plant every 5-6 months, though there are several things you need to consider before doing so.

Pruning will also help maintain the airflow between the leaves, which is essential for the plant's growth.

And it will prevent pests and diseases from affecting your plant.

6. Don't Keep The Plant In The Bathroom For Too Long

I know it may sound odd, but it's important to keep your Snake plant in the bathroom for a limited time.

I recommend keeping the plant in the bathroom for two to three weeks and then moving it to another location.

The reason for this is simple.

The bathroom is a high-humidity environment.

And too much humidity can be harmful to the plant.

So, by moving the plant around, you will be able to manage humidity levels.

This way, your plant will stay happy for a long time.

On the whole, these are some of the most important tips you need to follow if you want to grow a Snake plant in the bathroom.

In the next section, I will share some tips on how to care for your plant in a windowless bathroom.

Tips For Growing A Snake Plant In The Bathroom Without Windows

Can you grow a Snake plant in the bathroom without windows?

The answer is yes, you can.

But there are a few things you need to keep in mind.

1. Find The Bright Spot

Since there is no natural light in the bathroom, you will need to find a bright spot for your plant.

Ideally, you should place your plant near a fluorescent light.

But if that's not possible, you can also place your plant under incandescent light.

However, the light shouldn't be too harsh.

You don't want to scorch the leaves of your plant.

2. Be Careful With The Fertilizer

When growing a Snake plant in such conditions, you must be careful with the fertilizer.

Due to a lack of natural light, the plant will not be able to photosynthesize.

And that means it will not be able to produce food for itself.

So, there is no point in providing excess fertilizer to the plant.

It will only lead to the accumulation of toxic chemicals in the soil, which can be harmful to the plant.

3. Provide Enough Airflow

Another important thing you need to do is to provide enough airflow to the plant.

If the bathroom doesn't have proper ventilation, the air will become stagnant.

And that won't be beneficial for the plant.

In such a situation, you will need to work on the ventilation.

You can either open the bathroom door or use a fan to circulate the air.

4. Limit The Watering Frequency As Well

There is no point in watering the plant too often.

In fact, it will only accumulate in the pot.

Lack of ventilation and sunlight will cause the water to become stagnant.

And that can lead to the development of fungal issues.

So, you should only water the plant when the soil is dry.

Now, remember these four essential tips, and you will be able to grow a Snake plant in the windowless bathroom.

With that being said, let's move on to the next section and talk about the FAQs related to this topic.
